The Phenomenon of Smiling Depression
Hello Ladies!
When You Smile but Don't Feel Happy Inside..
At its core, depression is an illness characterized by feelings of sadness, emptiness, and despair. But not all depressed people fit this stereotype. In fact, some people who suffer from depression can seem happy on the outside, even while they're dying on the inside. This phenomenon is known as "smiling depression."
Smiling Depression: Why It Happens
Smiling depression is more common than you might think. In fact, research suggests that as many as 1 in 5 women suffer from it. So why does it happen? There are a few possible explanations.
First, many women are socialized to believe that they need to be strong and stoic.
They're taught that it's not "ladylike" to show emotions like sadness or anger. As a result, they may bottle up their feelings and put on a brave face for the outside world, even when they're dying inside.
Second, some women may be afraid to admit that they're not happy.
They may worry that people will judge them or think less of them if they reveal their true feelings. So instead, they put on a fake smile and pretend everything is okay.
Finally, some women may simply not realize that they're depressed. Because depression can manifest itself in physical symptoms like fatigue and insomnia, some women write off their low mood as simply being tired. But the truth is, tiredness can be a symptom of depression—not the other way around.
If you think you might be suffering from smiling depression, know that you're not alone. Thousands of other women are struggling with the same thing. And there's no shame in seeking help. If your symptoms are impacting your ability to function day-to-day, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional about treatment options. With the right help, you can start feeling like yourself again. Until Next Time!...XOXO 🍁🧡🍂
